Taunton firefighter Brooks Cornell held without bail

A Taunton firefighter with a reputation for running afoul of the law was ordered held without bail Monday morning during his latest arraignment in Taunton District Court. Brooks Cornell, 30, will now face a probation violation hearing on July 2 stemming from his warrant arrest June 8 by Providence police for an incident the day before in Acushnet. Acushnet police have charged him with reckless operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, illegal passing, driving on a suspended license, failing to stop for police, violation of a protective order and threatening to commit a crime, to whit, murder. Cops say a drunken Cornell — who has a rap sheet of drunken and reckless driving arrests dating back to — that night threatened to beat up at least one officer and tried spitting on police before being pepper-sprayed in the face. Cornell during those three months continued to work as a city firefighter. In addition to potential jail time or harsher probation, Cornell faces the prospect of losing his job as a Taunton firefighter. City Solicitor Jason Buffington said police this week served Cornell with a letter of notification for a hearing next Tuesday before the Taunton City Council. The Council, in its capacity as appointing authority, is in a position to fire any firefighter or police officer. The last time they did so was , when after weeks of disciplinary hearings they voted to fire then-rookie cop Joshua Acerra.

But, the term still held a lot of weight. Here’s an excerpt from our Word of the Year announcement in The national debate can arguably be summarized by the question: In the past two years, has there been enough change? Has there been too much? Meanwhile, many Americans continue to face change in their homes, bank accounts and jobs.

Only time will tell if the latest wave of change Americans voted for in the midterm elections will result in a negative or positive outcome. I love horses, they’re my friends! When Cracker Jack introduced a bigger size bag for their product, the advertising played up the size of the bag to mythic proportions: A guy bringing home a bag tied to the roof of his car can’t fit it in his garage, a guy buying Cracker Jack at a baseball game gets crushed by a flying bag, etc. The prize inside also got scaled up; guess what a young girl gets inside her Cracker Jack bag?

While the verse doesn’t mention any of the headaches farmers have always had to contend with – the vagaries of the season, physically demanding work, increasing costs and decreasing prices – it does sum up very nicely the feeling of independence and satisfying productivity that is at the heart of every farmer.

Apparently dating from the late ‘s up until the middle of the last century, quite a lot of china and pottery was produced in England with variations of the Farmers Arms poem. The Adams family produced pottery in Staffordshire back to the 17th century although they are no longer in existence some of the designs are still manufactured by Wedgwood. Their work tended to have a brighter red, blue and yellow than the pottery produced by Adams, however they use the same black transfer technique.

Knowing this, I wanted to set a clear expectation that the study of language is a key component for the year by asking them to read this book rather than a narrative or argument. This lesson also serves as an assessment of how closely they attended to these questions as they read the book, since they will need their notes to their three prompts for this activity.

This newcomer in the brick colony is conceded to be one of the finest brickmaking establishments on the picturesque Hudson, famed as the head-center of the industry in this quarter of the globe. All that goes to make a location desirable is found at Newton Hook in great liberality–pure sand in illimitable quantity, hills of clay that literally can never be exhausted and a small mountain of the best shale that the state of New York can boast. In addition to these admirable resources are the unequalled means of transportation afforded by the New York Central railroad on the one hand and the waterway of the world on the other.

Of equal importance with location are the up-to-date labor-saving devices that have been incorporated in the new plant. Newton Hook was formerly Coxsackie Station, but the name was changed recently, partly because it was too frequently confused with the town of Coxsackie on the west shore of the river, and partly because the topography makes it appropriate, for a hook-shaped peninsula juts into the river at that point. The Cary property is several hundred feet south of the railroad station at one of the most commanding points of the eastern shore.

Back of the buildings that comprise the plant rise a series of hills, each a mine of wealth from the viewpoint of the brickmaker, and the company owns acres of these convolutions extending back from the river.

Photo by Jim K. In the late ‘s, as plans were being developed for an expressway network to serve Boston and its inner-ring suburbs, the Massachusetts Department of Public Works MassDPW announced plans for an outer bypass of the Boston area. The commonwealth stated the purpose of the outer bypass as follows: In its western sweep some 30 miles from Boston, it will pass close to Worcester, and swing south and east again to serve Milford and other manufacturing areas in the south-central area.

Thus, the loop, in addition to bypassing the heavily urbanized areas of the north, will provide a much-needed boost to the economic development of the cities and towns it serves by providing swift, easy access to all parts of the state and the nation. Stretching from Salisbury to Foxborough, the “Relocated Route ” was to be routed through a mix of industrialized and lightly populated areas roughly along a mile radius of Boston. It was to supplement the “Relocated Route ” Yankee Division Highway , which was being built to serve towns and inner-ring suburbs roughly along a mile radius of Boston, and the proposed but never built Inner Belt Expressway I in the urban core.

Julian year astronomy The Julian year, as used in astronomy and other sciences, is a time unit defined as exactly This is the normal meaning of the unit “year” symbol “a” from the Latin annus used in various scientific contexts. Fundamentally, expressing a time interval in Julian years is a way to precisely specify how many days not how many “real” years , for long time intervals where stating the number of days would be unwieldy and unintuitive.

By convention, the Julian year is used in the computation of the distance covered by a light-year.

Picture the state’s suburban and rural hospitals as nervous dates, seeking a stable partner in an uncertain health care world. After a wave of consolidations and new alliances last year, industry leaders say will likely bring another round of community hospitals pairing up with what they hope will be their perfect match. Northeast also has a network of primary and specialty-care physician practices. Discussion is still under way.

Hospitals and other health care providers are under mounting pressure from state and federal regulators and insurance providers to cut costs while improving the ways they coordinate patient care. The changes come on top of existing struggles at many community hospitals, such as Medicare and Medicaid payments that fall short of the actual cost of treating elderly and poor patients, and competing with large academic medical centers in Boston. Several freestanding, nonprofit hospitals said they plan to remain independent this year.

But several last year scrambled to partner with academic centers to provide more specialized services locally, strengthen existing partnerships, pool resources with other community hospitals or join larger networks in hopes of staying competitive. Consolidation could lead to better-coordinated care, and mergers have led to new investments in hospitals that need upgrades, said Amy Whitcomb Slemmer, executive director of patient advocacy group Health Care for All.

But the group wants the state to ensure expanding institutions don’t end up hiking costs for patients or making it harder to access care in a larger system. In Lowell, Saints Medical Center and Lowell General Hospital, which also serve patients from nearby communities, announced a new partnership last October. But some of the biggest changes came with the arrival of a major for-profit player among traditionally nonprofit hospitals.
