Assyrian Rituals of Life-Cycle Events Yoab Benjamin Historical Background, Conservation and Renewal Much as a common language links all Assyrians together, Assyrian customs, even if they have been greatly modified over time, provide a cultural link between Assyrians around the world. At least to some extent, the rituals and religious rites that accompany life’s milestones — primarily birth, marriage or death -represent what it means to be Assyrian. Although their origins are often difficult to trace, the rituals practiced by contemporary Assyrians are perhaps as old as the days of ancient Assyria, and have been treasured and guarded through the centuries. These ancestral traditions may be observed out of respect for the older generation, but they also represent wisdom and moral values, and perhaps Assyrian culture itself. Thus, many of the practices remain deeply ingrained in the lives of Assyrians, and are often regarded as intrinsic to the continued existence of the Assyrian lifestyle. Nevertheless, some Assyrian customs have not survived over time. Certain social practices which were widespread as recently as the early ‘s have since been ignored or forgotten.
In Germany, in France, in England, scientific men have tried to arrange the vast number of facts collected, so as to draw a genealogical tree and represent the way in which man has evolved from the fire-mist to the civilized human being. But when you have traced even accurately the pedigree of man’s body, you have not traced the pedigree of man. Man is not his body; the body is but the garment that he wears; and man can never be understood, when you leave out of his pedigree the Spirit that makes him eternal, and the intelligence, which is an aspect of that Spirit differentiating itself in the world of matter, and manifesting as intellect and as mind.
Thus the scientific pedigrees of man are all thrown out of court by the partial nature of the pedigree, and by the fact that you find the least human part of man exclusively dealt with. In theosophical teachings – those which have been given to us by the great Sages of the past, reinforced, verified, and repeated in scripture after scripture of all the great religions of the world – in these you will find a truer pedigree, that deals with every part of the nature of man.
It is not alone in the Hindu 1 Scriptures, though they are the fullest in this respect, that you can find traces of that primeval revelation, that you can understand something of the long road that man has travelled in his journey from the mineral to the God; nay, rather should I say, from the mineral to the God, for as is truly said, not only in Hindu writings, but by our brothers of Islam:
Confused and need advice- Older U. Department of State from the mid s until distributed a document titled ” Marriage to Saudis ,” offering straight-talking advice to American women contemplating tying the knot with Saudi men. As Martin Kramer describes what he calls “a minor classic by an anonymous diplomat”: It is remarkable for its undiplomatic and anecdotal tone, so distant from the department’s standard bureaucratic style. For prospective spouses, “Marriage to Saudis” constituted an official tutorial in Saudi culture; for others, it served as a fascinating example of practical anthropology, school of hard knocks.
Here is a choice excerpt: The donning of the black abayas and face veils American citizen wives swear that the transformation in their Saudi husbands occurs during the transatlantic flight to the Kingdom. There is the universal recollection of approaching Riyadh and witnessing the donning of the black abayas and face veils by the fashionably dressed Saudi women. For many women, the Saudi airport is the first time they see their husband in Arab dress i.
For those American women reluctant to wear an abaya the all-encompassing black cloak and for those Saudi husbands who did not make an issue of the abaya prior to arriving, the intense public scrutiny that starts at the airport—given to a western woman who is accompanying a Saudi male—is usually the catalyst for the eventual covering up. Since the overwhelming majority of American citizen wives never travel to the Kingdom prior to their marriage, they are abruptly catapulted into Saudi society.
Despite its affectionate title, the document includes a warning against Catholic women marrying Muslim men.

Share Pride is the excessive love of one’s own excellence. It is ordinarily accounted one of the seven capital sins. Thomas, however, endorsing the appreciation of St. Gregory , considers it the queen of all vices, and puts vainglory in its place as one of the deadly sins. In giving it this pre-eminence he takes it in a most formal and complete signification.

It is divided into two main parts: The first six chapters are the history section, telling of a Jew named Daniel of royal descent, who was taken captive along with the rest of the people from the city of Jerusalem. King Nebuchadnezzer placed Daniel among others in his service, and had them trained. This section tells of the persecutions that Daniel and his friends undergo, and also of the high positions that Daniel attains.
It relates the fact that God is in control, and how He protects His faithful servants. The second section can either be construed as prophecy, or history containing some prophecy, depending on the date one assumes that the book was written. The battles are between the four successive kingdoms of the Babylonians, the Medo-Persians or the Medians then the Persians, the Greeks, and possibly the Romans.
Chapter eleven is the focus of most of the controversy, as, according to most scholars, it gives a very detailed account of the battles of Antiochus Epiphanes.

Tfinkdji’s treatment of the diocese of Mardin, where he was himself an Assyrian Chaldean Catholic priest , is more than usually detailed, but although containing much valuable information is not free from error. From the middle of the eighteenth century onward, most of the Chaldean bishops of Mardin were buried in the city’s church of Rabban Hormizd and the dates of their deaths were recorded in their epitaphs. These dates were used by Tfinkdji, and most of them also appear in an undated note made around the end of the nineteenth century in a manuscript in the Mardin collection, which lists the bishops of Mardin from Basil Hesro ob.

The Churches of Galatia? When Paul writes to the Galatians, is he writing to one of the churches or to all of them? Does that mean he made multiple copies of the same letter, or that he wanted the one letter to circulate? Galatians, the “most authentic” of the Pauline epistles, raises more questions than it answers. If its pugnacious author was, in reality, an early Christian missionary, then the letter is perhaps the first record of his clash with competitors over a territory he had claimed for himself.
Paul’s letter was ostensibly addressed to “the churches of Galatia” but gives no clue as to precisely where those churches were located. Speculation falls into two camps, the “north Galatian” theory, centred on the original Gallic tribes; and the “south Galatian” theory, centred on towns in Romanized Pisidia-Lycaonia recorded in Acts. Both may be wrong.
Why would “Paul” — or any other apostle from the Levant with a message for the Gentiles — eschew the more accessible, Greek-speaking coastal cities of Asia Minor for the uplands of Anatolia, populated by diverse, polyglot and warlike tribesmen? If this “frontier zone” provided credulous converts for a sharp-witted Jewish proselytizer, were these same illiterate tribesmen really the audience for an epistle of finely nuanced theology? Yet if it was to Roman colonies of the interior that Paul addressed his missive, why choose these Latin-speaking martial towns for a message of redemption and a critique of Judaism?
Something about Paul’s dealings with the Galatians in not quite kosher. Paul — High Plains Drifter? The Acts of the Apostles uses curiously archaic and unhelpful terms to describe the core areas of Paul’s “missions to the Gentiles”:

MATCHaldean is a private and personalized matchmaking service that connects like-minded single Chaldeans who might not have the chance to meet otherwise. We want Chaldeans to meet and marry Chaldeans so our community can stay together. At MATCHaldean, each person remains completely confidential and our matchmaker will personally find each a match.

With that in mind, the aim of this service was to eliminate the worries the community associates with dating. Everyone in MATCHaldean remains anonymous, everyone meets with the matchmaker who checks identification and divorce papers, if applicable, no last names or contact information are given out unless both people tell the matchmaker to do so.

Hundreds of Chaldean men and women have signed up with us since July, There is clearly a demand for the services we provide and our clients always mention how grateful they are for finally having a better way to meet other Chaldeans. Some of these clients used to believe that they would not be able to find and marry a Chaldean similar to themselves.
Many of the women have said that they would be willing to marry non-Chaldeans but that they preferred Chaldean, which is why we have made it our mission to bring these Chaldeans together and keep our community thriving.
