Bungie, please: my Destiny 2 wishlist

The six-player co-op activities have long served as Destiny’s true endgame challenges which require teamwork, prior knowledge, and plenty of effective firepower — but they’re not for everyone. For starters, they don’t allow for any kind of matchmaking, so you need to manually gather five other Guardians if you want a shot at victory. On top of that, they can also be pretty darn tough if you’re relatively new to the endgame grind, or if your allies refuse to work together properly. Indeed, there’s no doubt that a lot of Destiny players feel like they don’t have the time or the commitment to get stuck into raiding — and that’s perfectly reasonable — but unfortunately for them, there’s been no alternative to Raids if you’re looking to hit that max level cap. With the shooter’s next slice of downloadable content, House of Wolves , Bungie is implementing a new upgrade system which allows you to hit the cap with any legendary or exotic equipment. And this new process isn’t just for DLC buyers, either — everyone will be able to ascend their favourite bits of gear until they’re as powerful as the equipment gained from raiding. However, without purchasing House of Wolves, you won’t be able to partake in Prison of Elders — a fresh endgame activity that slots into the title’s new upgrade system rather nicely.

I am a trickster who doesn’t know solitude. May 3, Bungie, please: Today, I want to look ahead to Destiny 2 and discuss some of the things that I think Bungie need to do to make the game great. So, here are the main areas of importance that Bungie should focus on to make Destiny 2 as good as it can be. The story was, in a word, terrible. Almost nothing was explained to the player, with important concepts being vaguely glossed over and the little information that was delivered to the player was done so in bland exposition dumps between seemingly meaningless bouts of shooting things.

There were hints of a deeper lore and more dedicated players took to the Grimoire Cards to expand on these, but this was an inelegant system that few people bothered to do. Which is a shame, because the world Bungie has built with Destiny is genuinely interesting. The content is there, the team at Bungie just need to present it better.

Bungie is adding matchmaking to Destiny’s Weekly Heroic Strike missions as of the game’s next update. In fact, matchmaking will now be enforced – meaning no more taking on the activity solo. There.

By Vince Ingenito [Editor’s Note: We’ve been posting our impressions of Destiny since September 3rd. Our scored review was posted on September 18, It attempts to weave threads from many popular genres together into one interconnected tapestry, but your experience will depend entirely upon which of those threads you tug on hardest. Exit Theatre Mode At the very least, it provides blistering firefights and brilliantly crafted worlds to have them in.

In fact, the exceptional caliber of its moment-to-moment gameplay is what partially excuses the fact that it never quite realizes its grand design. For as fun as it is, Destiny just doesn’t fully commit to all of its disparate parts, making it simultaneously many different things, and none of them at all. Bungie has a history of excellent world-building, and Destiny is a powerful expression of that excellence. From the moment your AI companion wakes you from your long slumber in the shadow of the colossal wall around Old Russia, the world of Destiny feels grand.

Picturesque, static backdrops are slyly blended with wide-open spaces and large vertical terrain features, creating an effective illusion of scale. Even if it isn’t as wide-open as it initially appears, each of Destiny’s four main planets are more than big enough to get lost in. Even atop your speedy, instantly summonable Sparrow bike, which gleefully handles a lot like what I always imagined a Star Wars speeder bike might, getting from one end of a planet to the other takes a while.

Factor in all the caves, temples, and other structures housed within, and there’s a ton of ground to cover.

No matchmaking for Raids in Destiny.

No new raid though. This might make some people angry. Because I hardly ever play raids. Online multiplayer and matchmaking algorithms have been a staple of multiplayer gaming ever since Blizzard invented Battle. Missions that are nearly impossible to complete alone. Missions that, by definition, require a team to defeat.

Bungie has revealed in recent discussions that the developer of sci-fi FPS Destiny is looking at potentially adding raid and private matchmaking sometime in the future, which could be a relief to those affected by the quite stringent requirements.

Keep sounding off about it, and maybe someday some matchmade Fireteam mates will hear you, too. Instead, players would only likely be able to complete the raids with people they know and can communicate with effectively. During the first gameplay reveal in Los Angeles yesterday , Bungie executives took the stage to outline the substantial quality of life improvements the sequel will introduce to make this happen. From removing the need to load in and out of one area for different activities to letting players more easily group up with strangers, Bungie is going to great lengths to paint its new installment as a more thoughtful, well-meaning, and accessible video game.

On top of the grind of daily play and the ever-increasing amount of items to collect, Destiny was hobbled by befuddling design choices and maddening technical constraints. Players complained endlessly about not having enough space for all their gear and weapons, the lack of narrative and cinematic direction, and an almost Kafkaesque progression system. Destiny spent its first year looking like an extended beta , as Bungie tweaked and changed it constantly in response to player feedback.

The end result was a title that reminded players that their time just might be better spent elsewhere, creating a constant tug-of-war battle between that nagging feeling and the satisfying, dopamine rush of another new piece of loot or a hard-fought victory. For those without a dedicated group of friends to play with, Destiny could feel like an alienating and isolated experience.

Oct 29, 4 This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game looks amazing and the music is great. The plot is shallow, filled with characters that are generic, lifeless, and utterly devoid of any reason as to why you might care about them. The main baddy, Gaul, has no motivation for anything he does other than “he’s a bad guy”, no backstory, and no reason for doing anything he does. The NPC protagonists are lifeless, flat, 2-dimensional objects who serve no purpose except as narrative devices to further what can only generously be called a plot.

Bungie recently confirmed that unlike strikes of the Crucible there shall be no matchmaking in Raids. Raids are Destiny’s endgame content, and are extremely difficult, six-player, missions that may take hours to complete.

Can you add matchmaking for heroic adventures in the Infinite Forest?. Feedback Feedback and suggestions for Destiny 2. It’s really annoying to have to wait for people to get on to form a group for Raids, Nightfalls and Heroic strikes, especially since we can’t go to a public area like the Tower and recruit due to the voice chat restrictions imposed in the game.

Not to mention it’s hard to find people of the right level as well. Matchmaking would make this so much easier and make getting gear and leveling it less of a hassle.

Anti-Frustration Features

Edit Unlike story missions and strikes , raids give players only the bare minimum of guidance and objectives and instead challenge Guardians to figure everything out as they proceed. Normal mode focuses on learning the raid’s mechanics, communicating with the team, and strategizing. The hard mode for a raid can be unlocked after it is first completed on Normal mode. However, this difficulty replaces the Light version for Wrath of the Machine and it’s only accessible while it is the Weekly Featured Raid.

Destiny 2 introduced raid lairs that share the same ideas as regular raids by incorporating 6-player cooperative activities but are built to have less encounters and an overall shorter completion time.

Bungie has responded to widespread calls to add matchmaking to Destiny’s raids, beginning with the Vault of Glass. The studio is “discussing” it.
